Key Flu Information

The flu is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness and at times can cause death. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine every year.

The flu virus is mainly spread through coughing, sneezing or talking. It can also be spread by touching a contaminated surface or object, and then touching your mouth, eyes or nose. The flu virus can be passed to another person even before you realize you are sick. You can infect others beginning one day before symptoms develop and up to 5-7 days after becoming sick.

Everyone six months and older should get a flu vaccine each year to prevent the spread of the virus.

Information about this year’s Influenza Vaccine

Each year the World Health Organization provides its recommendations for the composition of the flu vaccine. This year the WHO has recommended that the H1N1 strain be included in 2011-2012 vaccine, as such all influenza vaccines administered in the US will included the H1N1 strain.
